I am often asked- Why Dexters?   In recent years there has been a worldwide surge of interest in Dexter cattle. These gentle, hardy and easy to handle animals are one of the world's smallest bovines. Considering their small size (cows generally stand between 36 and 42 inches at the hip and weigh somewhat less than 750 pounds)  I found that I would be able to handle them a bit more easily than some of the other, larger,  breeds. They require about 1/3 less pasture and feed than other breeds. They thrive in hot as well as cold climates and do well outdoors year round, needing only a windbreak, shelter and fresh water. Fertility is high and calves are dropped in the field without difficulty. They are dual purpose, being raised for both milk and meat.

Here at the farm we have a fairly small herd of Dexters. Right now we have 5 cows, and two bulls- one dun and one red.   Our red bull is just turing a year of age- and we're not sure yet who he'll be bred to in 2008.  Three of our cows were bottle babies- so they are all quite friendly. The two horned cows are much more reserved. I will be putting up pictures of our girls as soon as possible, though it is almost impossible to get good quality pictures of our black girls. The Picture of the bull below is 'Braco Shoeshine'. I do have some semen from this guy, and hopefully will be able to utilize it in the future.  AI'ing will allow me to use bloodlines that I ordinarily would not be able to use.  Artificial insemination allows people to use the best genes in the world- without having to invest in the bull. We are also looking into buying some semen from another nice bull.
