Welcome to Veliraf Icelandic sheep.
We are currently a small flock, but with time and patience I'm sure we
will grow. Our original four Icelandic ewes all came from Nancy Pease at
Glen Osprey Farms, and up until 2007 our rams have always come from Stefania Dingum of Yeoman Farm. Our herd health is taken very seriously,
and when we do decide to introduce new animals into our flock they are quarantined in a pen far away from our other animals.
We are currently free of OPP, scrapie, footrot, and CL, and we will do our best to keep it that way. We are also
enrolled in the Voluntary Scrapie Flock Certification Program- Flock #50. |

This picture is of our original flock sire, Baloo. He is truly the ram that endeared me to the Icelandic sheep. He was a dominant ram- and even though he was polled he would tolerate no nonsense....from any species. I'll never forget the site of him flying over a four foot fence to teach our Dexter Cattle some manners when he thought they were mis-behaving. It truly was a sight to behold!! He could have escaped at any time he chose- but instead he was quite content to stay with his little harem of ewes. Sadly, we lost him to rabies during his first winter here. A couple of weeks after he died- his first lambs were born, and we still have his two daughters from his only breedings- Sweet Pea and Surprise here. Our second ram Horton, did a fine job here as well. We still have a few of his daughters here as well, one of whom could possibly be the biggest Icelandic ewe I've ever seen. I still miss our big 'Meat Mountain' as he has been called- but am happy with the contribution he has made to our flock. We currently have a beautiful white boy whom we call Arnold- as he's built!!! 2007 saw the first of his lambs hit the ground here(of course only two of them were ewes) but we are quite impressed with what we are seeing so far. He has been used on all of our girls again for 2008, in the hopes that perhaps we will see more ewe lambs born. We are planning to keep back all of the best ewe lambs born as replacement ewes, we would like to grow our Icelandic flock to number about 50 ewes. We'll just see how long that takes us!!! |
