Welcome to Veliraf Icelandic sheep.  We are currently a small flock, but with time and patience I'm sure we will grow.  Our original four Icelandic ewes all came from Nancy Pease at Glen Osprey Farms, and up until 2007 our rams have always come from Stefania Dingum of Yeoman Farm. Our herd health is taken very seriously, and when we do decide to introduce new animals into our flock they are quarantined in a pen far away from our other animals. We are currently free of OPP, soremouth, and CL, and we will do our best to keep it that way. We are also enrolled in the Voluntary Scrapie Flock Certification Program- Flock #50.

We are currently concentrating on the following traits-
  • Multiple births
  • Health- without any supplements or chemicals
  • Fast, Growthy lambs- on grass, not grain
  • Good Conformation
  • Nice Fleece
  • Ewes that will lamb as yearlings
  • and finally.....Colour variety

Our original four ewes were all selected carefully, and are all somewhat related.  Since we wanted multiple births, the girls selected have all either had triplets or were from a set of triplets.  Two of the originals were black, one was white and one was moorit.   Our first ram was a beautiful polled moorit badgerface.  He did his job well, and we still have a couple of his daughters in our flock.   He was followed buy a spotted horned(carrying polled) ram, named Horton....a decendant of old Saddleback.   He is pictured above- I still miss that big guy!!   We currently have a magnificent well horned white ram- carrying mouflon.   2007 saw his first lambs hit the ground here, and I am quite impressed!!   For the first few years we are planning to keep back all of the ewe lambs born as replacement ewes, as long as their mothers and they themselves meet our stringent requirements!!!!

Below are pages explaining in more detail about the Icelandics that currently reside at Veliraf Farm.
