Welcome to Veliraf Shetland Ewes page.
Here you will find the lovely ladies who produce many beautiful
lambs for us each and every spring. We still have a few of our foundation ladies with us- and though they
are getting up there in age, they are still productive. Because we have such a large flock
(currently in March of 2008 we are at about 80 ewes, including ewe lambs)we no longer provide descriptions of each and every ewe to be found here. | |
We do expect our ewes to remain productive members of our flock. We expect them to maintain a 150% lambing average- and are seriously working on increasing that average.
We are also working towards having our ewe lambs in their first year, as that greatly increases the lambing percentage over a ewes lifetime. It also prevents us keeping lambs for a full two years before they become
productive members of our flock. We do however, still have our favourites. These are the ewes who, for whatever reason have endeared themselves to us. A good example of one of the special ones is Cherrington Penelope-in 2008 she could NOT get over the fact that it was weaning time for her single ram lamb.
For almost a month after weaning- she would come into the barn and glare accusingly at us. She knew, you see, that we were the ones who had taken her babe away. Although she is one of our most aloof ewes- she would make sure to search us out so she could let us know how she felt.
