Welcome to Veliraf Shetland Ram page. Here you will find the gorgeous gentleman who make up our flock sires. Currently we have over 10 adult rams that reside here. Although this seems like a large number of rams for our relatively small flock, we decided that these boys were too nice to pass up on!!! They will also provide us with some genetic variety to work with in the years to come. Some of our rams are original Canadian bloodlines, some of them have loads of UK genetics in their pedigrees, and some are imports from the US. We are quite pleased with our large collection of rams, and we hope we can put them to good use. This page will be updated every now and then to provide more information about what these handsome boys can produce. The picture is of our inquisitive boys checking me out in the pasture!! The more reserved boys can be seen in the background. |
Bramble NickSire- Walnut Rise Trevor
(Enfeild Greyling X Walnut Rise Mary)
Dam- Bramble Fay
(Willowcroft Jamie X Bramble Gillian)
A new addition to our farm for the 2008/2009 breeding season. I like him. Nice dense fleece with a soft handle to it. Nice in the britch area as well. A large percentage of this guy is UK genetics- so I'm very pleased to have been able to purchase him. This guy will be bred to a large groups of ewes- as it stands right now he'll be bred to around 20. Black is one of my favourite colours in Shetlands- I'm hoping he'll produce lots of nice lambs for us here. He does carry moorit as well- but we're hoping we'll get a higher percentage of black.
Valley Road SpencerSire- Valley Road Junior
(Sheltering Pines Kracken X Dailley Clio)
Dam- Winter Sky Dainty
(Canosia Farm Edghan X Bono Creek Cleome)
We purchased this guy just in time for the 2007/2008 breeding season. He does have a shorter staple than I prefer- however, he has much going for him. He is a very nice, very crimpy fleece. Nice in the britch area as well. He is also POLLED!! A nice change for us here. He was bred to all of our ewe lambs last year- but only managed to produce one polled ram. He produced both black and moorit- with no iset, and no spotted lambs were born to him. So far the lambs look very nice- though we have only one ewe lamb from him. We will be breeding him to a group of mature ewes this year, hopefully we'll see more ewe lambs being born!!
Veliraf Silver
StreakSire- Cherrinton Heathcliff
(Skerryvore Corbie x Skerryvore Annie Black)
Dam- Veliraf's Pickle
(Veliraf's
Callum x Veliraf's Single Note)
This guy is the absolute best of our ram lambs born in
2006. He has a very soft, crimpy fleece which should be outstanding. He has
plenty of size and substance. His horns are a bit different than what I
am used to, and are likely going to curl quite tightly, though with good
clearance. He has matured into a truly fantastic ram. The 2008 breeding season
will see him being bred to a few ewes we have recently acquired. I can
hardly wait to see what he will produce. He may also be bred to our ewe lambs from 2008- we'll have to wait and see.
Sire- Cherrinton Heathcliff Penelope is one of the first ewes that arrived here at the farm.
Obviously, she's a keeper. She consistantly produces twins, and they are always some of the hardiest ones born. This guy has a nice fine fleece, nice wide horns, and attitude!! An adult ram in a lambs body- he is already at the top of the heirarchy heap.
Sire- Dailley Kismet
This guy is gorgous, he has beautiful horns, and a fine
crimpy fleece. He was purchased based on a picture or two-
but was I ever happy with him when he arrived. He is a dominant
ram- but not an agressive one. I have used him quite heavily for the past two
years, and I have been very pleased with what he has produced. One of his ewe
lambs from 2008 placed at the top of a large group of lambs at the Rockton Fair.
Sire- Whistlestop Lerwick
This boy is a more refined ram. His fleece has density that I love.
I would prefer to see a more fine fleece-
but if I can combine his density with the fine fleeces of my girls-
I will have quite the winning combination. We have a few of his daughters here-
so it's time for him to do his job in another flock. He is currently for sale.
Sire- WillowGarden Montegomery Clift
I wasn't terribly impressed with this boy when he first came home, but I've now changed my tune.
His fleece is a bit more coarse than what I am used to- but he
does bring the opportunity to introduce some colour genetics that were previously unknown here. I have been quite pleased with
what this guy has been able to produce here when
bred to ewes of my line. I have many of
his daughters who are going to remain in this
flock. He produces black, moorit, spotting and gulmoget.
Sire- WillowGarden Luther Vandross This guy is gorgous, he has beautiful horns, and a fine
crimpy fleece. Nice growth rate as well for a young ram. He seems to have a
quite short staple- but we'll see what it's like when we shear in the fall. I am
quite happy with this little guy, and am glad I acquired him in a
trade!!! He too, will introduce some new colour genetics, and has been bred
to mostly black ewes in order to keep the fawn colour from dominating this
years lambs. We're hoping to produce some nice black katmoget ewes in order
to expand our flock furthur. Sire- Whistlestop Lerwick Another new addition to our farm. I have been looking for a nice white ram for a while. For some reason the whites I have found have all been a bit coarser
than I prefer. This guy seems pretty nice so far- but perhaps could have a slightly better topline. Could just be the way he is standing. He has nice size and substance, and he has quite a presence in our ram group.
His one funky horn makes stand out a bit.
He'll be bred to a group of about 10 ewes this year. We don't have many white ewes in our flock- so we're hoping he'll fix that!! Sire- Underhill Bartok A new addition to our farm. I like him, I think!! He feels a little coarser than some of my boys-
but I think he will have much to offer our flock. He'll be bred to a group of about 10 or so ewes
in order for us to see what he is capable of producing.
We can hardly wait. He will produce black, moorit, spotting, and katmoget lambs. Veliraf Shetland Sheep
