Welcome to Veliraf Farm Tamworth
Pigs. These pigs are of Irish origin, and are called 'the
ginger pig'. They have a distinct colour- which can vary from golden
red, to quite a dark red. Black spots and whorls of hair are quite
unacceptable, and animals with these faults should not be registered. They
are a bacon pig, and as such, have long bodies and deep sides. Their ears
are erect, and their snouts, in comparison with many other breeds, are
very long. Unfortunately Tamworths are currently in a waning cycle of popularity. The Rare Breeds has them listed as 'critical' meaning 1-35 animals are registered every year. They are not particularly suited to intensive operations, and have not been developed with the concrete floors of large operations in mind. However, they are one of the most rugged, hardy and active breed of swine you will find. They are proficient grazers and foragers, and they are excellent for those looking for a lean type of hog to raise for meat. Tams have the highly regarded reputation of producing the absolute best bacon of ANY of the other breeds of swine, and is quite uniform in type. The sows are excellent mothers, and have ample milk to raise large litters. They are willing and able to survive out on pasture with only a simple shelter to keep them out of the worst weather. | |
| We strive to keep our animals as happy and healthy as possible. We do not not use farrowing crates, nor do we clip piglets teeth or tails. Our adults pigs are fed a sow ration, with hay in the winter. When summer rolls around they will be moved out to the yard- where they will be able to roll in the mud, graze on grass, and have access to plenty of healthy sunlight and fresh air. | |
